Massive crackdown on drug cartel’s core network in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the help of Belgian, French and US police force

In a significant raid across Bosnia and Herzegovina, a coordinated law enforcement effort led to the arrest of 23 individuals closely associated with a prominent drug lord, previously captured in November 2022. This operation, supported by Europol and dubbed “Black Tie,” targeted homes and offices of these key figures, intensifying the crackdown on a major criminal network known as the ‘super cartel’ that dominates the European cocaine market.

Sweeping actions against a global network

The raid involved over 40 search operations where local officers, along with specialists from Europol and agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), played crucial roles. This collective effort marks a continuation of the international strategy to dismantle the intricate web of the super cartel, following the pattern set by the previous operation ‘Desert Light.’

Operation Black Tie: objectives and outcomes

The central aim was to bring charges against a Bosnian-Herzegovinian/Dutch national, already sentenced in 2023 to seven years for drug trafficking in the Netherlands, and to disrupt the operations of the criminal network he led. This suspect has been noted for orchestrating extensive drug trafficking operations from South America to Europe and Australia, based out of Dubai.

Further details of the arrests

The individuals detained include not only close associates of the drug lord but also corrupt officials who facilitated the cartel’s operations. Prior to the major action day, local authorities had already apprehended two suspects and confiscated significant assets including EUR 55,000 in cash, firearms, police radios, and documents related to money laundering. Additional seizures on the day of the raid included more cash, vehicles, laptops, and other crucial evidence.

Europol’s involvement and support

Europol has played a pivotal role in this extensive investigation, assisting with intelligence gathering, coordination, and deploying specialists to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their efforts have been instrumental in linking various elements of the criminal activities and supporting local enforcement actions.

Broader impact and cooperation

This operation reflects the ongoing commitment and cooperation among multiple countries and agencies, including Belgium, France, the United States, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, to combat sophisticated international drug trafficking networks. The European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT) also continues to play a crucial role in addressing serious international crime affecting the EU, showcasing the power of collaborative law enforcement efforts. The arrests and seizures from Operation Black Tie signify a major advancement in the global fight against drug trafficking, demonstrating the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling organized crime and disrupting major drug distribution networks.
